Synopsis

Artist in a Haystack - Alex Lam
Are you a professional videographer or photographer with lots of talent, yet not getting sufficient business? Could it be because you are not easily found by potential clients? Stick with Alex as he shares with you tips and tricks on how to use social media tools to engage with prospects and ultimately increase your sales!

Composition Vs Quality Vs Quantity - William G.
Is Wedding Photography about speed, quality, or is it all about “mood”!?! Or possibly, about quantity! How many thousands of pictures can you take for the client on that particular day? Will this kill you when you do the post processing editing later? This session reveals the techniques, the philosophies and practices of my work. It explores the role of the photographer and then breaks down the day visually into Getting ready, The Ceremony, Portraits and The Reception.

Cultural concepts behind weddings - Johan Sopiee, Jon Low, and Kaz Campbell
When you shoot a cultural wedding, do you know the symbolism behind each element? Come and learn how a Chinese wedding differs from a malay, or a sikh one. Never be ignorant about these customs again.

Creating interesting wedding videos - Adie
Standard wedding videos are boring to watch. Learn how to get people’s attention and hire you as a wedding videographer. What is your concept?

Developing the Photographer, Not the Image - Mark Leo
The only constant in the world is change and with changes comes new developments. How do we, as photographers, continue to build ourselves up technically as well as non-technically to face these new changes. In this session I will share some ways how industries out there keep up and plan development for their staff as well as knowledge transition.

Getting The Best Out Of Wedding-Related Media Channels - Kris Wong
Some specific areas to be covered include media opportunities, targeting, return on investment, attaining media exposure and building relationships with media owners.

How to buy second-hand equipment - Johan Sopiee
Listen and learn from Johan how you can scrimp and save a buck or two by buying pre-loved gear. Be fear-free when evaluating lenses and cameras. At the end of this session, there will be a session for you to buy and sell cameras, lenses and books. Bring your stuff along!

Integrity Selling & Smart Partnership: Making It in The Pre-Wedding Photography Business - Dennis Thean
To be a successful Photographer in the Wedding industry, you need to be more than just being a technically or artistically skillful, organized & meticulous person. The key success factors in making it in this highly competitive industry are Smart Partnership & Integrity Selling.

In a fragmented & crowded market, you need to stand out & reach to your prospective clientele in order to close the deals. Selling by integrity will earn you a good reputation & you will stand a good chance of being on top in your clients’ shortlisted vendors. Working smart with the correct industry partners will give you a wider client-coverage, good publicity and mutually-benefiting products & services that you can cross-sell to your clientele.

Anyone who is taking up wedding photography as a part-time or full-time business in the local market should attend this talk.

Pecha Kucha
This is a rapid quickfire line up of presenters, each with a maximum of 20 presentation slides, and only allowed to speak for 20 seconds per slide. Topics are fairly free, and you could describe your last shoot, a destination you’ve been to, camera gear you’d like to buy, etc. Sign up for this fun session!

Pricing your videography services
Are you able to earn enough to buy the next nasi lemak, or are you struggling? Learn how you should price your services.

Storytelling Editing
How can your sequence of images tell a story? Learn the art and hidden principles behind editing, whether it is a video or a sequence of photos. Train your mind to think in a series.

Discussion: To Be Or Not To Be: Turning Pro - Led by Ian Chong
With DSLR prices going down, more and more people are considering venturing into the wedding photography realm. But what does it really take to turn pro? What are the issues of leaving your full time job to launch into a photography career?

Wedding fashion shoot with two speedlights - Danny Chew
This talk is to share how a bridal gown fashion shoot can be done with minimal lighting. A successful shoot does not mean you need all the high-end gears and a large crew, more important is the planning that goes into preparing for the shoot. I will share how I light the shots that I’ve done and more importantly the lessons that I’ve learned while doing this shoot.

Wedding Photography Agreement - Asther Lau
Just ventured into wedding photography? Or looking for extra tips to tighten up your wedding photography agreement? I will be presenting a list of guidelines in hope to assist fellow photographers in drafting their own agreements/contracts for their personal as well as photography business usage.

Why’s your bag so HEAVY??? - Fiona Lim
Identifies the equipment used for the different types of wedding shoots ie pre-wedding, church ceremonies, beach weddings, etc. Sample photos will also be shared to delineate the different effects of each lens.

Y.O.U. - The Importance of Branding - Jenny Sun
How to define, establish, and market yourself as a photographer.

  2. Johan Sopiee Says:

i missed the first day coz i was in Penang :( heard it was great and fun! look forward to tomorrow morning. see you all there!

  3. Nick Chan Says:

    Hey ppl,

Shootfest 001 was awesome!! Really glad to have met so many awesome people who are willing to share and learn from one another…I personally learned a lot from every single session.

Fiona’s session was really enjoyable and a great way to kickstart the day. Really benefited from the detailed examples of the types of lenses used in different settings. Very comprehensive and helpful.

The “To Be Or Not To Be” session was also helpful in providing different perspectives on photography as a profession, and the different challenges faced when starting out full time or in juggling it with a full time job. To hear different ones share their stories and experiences was really great.

Both Mark & Alex’s sessions were very practical and discussed areas of development that are essential yet sometimes so easily overlooked in developing one’s self as a photographer…And the tweeter video was just hilarious!! U guys have no real friends…hahaha

As for Kenneth’s session, I personally was very inspired and now have a clearer view of what applying the photojournalistic approach to weddings is all about. Very nice balance between the theoretical base given as well as the practical tips and examples that effectively drive home the point.

And what can I say, Pecha Kucha was simply hillarious!! Thanks Woody, Eeyean, Kee Sitt, John, Grace & Junz for sharing… I especially benefited from Kee Sitt’s sharing on using video as a tool in promoting one’s self as a photographer…never thought about that before until now.

And last but definitely not least, Jon and Mun Keat’s sessions on lightroom and photoshop really helped provide an avenue to compare and learn about post-processing and improving digital workflow. Was definitely a good reminder for me as a guide and check to ensure that I’m heading in the right direction. Too bad it was running at the ‘graveyard shift’ where many people had left early or was tired from the long day, but it was still a great session nonetheless.

So yeah, that kinda sums up Day 1 of shootfest for me. Really learned and benefited so much from being a part of this great unconference!!

A shoutout to those who have worked so hard to make this happen. You know who you are. A big thank you guys for making it an awesome experience!!

    Can’t wait for tomorrow…

  4. maye Says:

me too, looking fwd tomorrow’s session and to meet up my idol ;p ! Thank you to all, yeah your are great, young and energetic!! The sharing sessions are definitely benefit lots of us very much, ohya, i love the pecha kucha especially! next time i’m also hope got chance to share mine (anyhow mine just a beginner’s work)

  5. TheBackpackr.com Says:

Nick, thanks for being the first person to respond and leave your feedback. I hope everyone else will chip in too.

  6. Haseo Says:

The unconference was eally good if we look at the time given for each speaker. If we can go more in-depth as just focus on 2-3 topics for one day, that will be great. I like Pecha Kucha session as a break during the unconference.

Looking forward to the upcoming session. :-))

  7. Andrew Says:

Shootfest was great. I’ve learned so much with regards to the wedding photography industry as a whole. I have to agree with Nick and maye, the pecha kucha session is hilarious yet inspiring and informative (ie. What not to do at a wedding session) at the same time.

Besides that, some of the session really helped in inspiring and pushing me forward to becoming a better photographer. Thanks a lot to all those who’ve shared, you guys ROX !!!

  8. Shootfest:001 - The Wedding (Day 2) | Mark Leo.Net Says:

[...] For all of you who participated at Shootfest, do leave your comments and feedback at this site here. [...]

  9. Nick Chan Says:

I missed the first few morning sessions. Would have really loved to have been there. I’m sure the sessions were great =)

Came in halfway during Danny’s talk on lighting and fashion shots. That being so, I still managed to learn quite a bit from the practical demonstration. Definitely would have been great to have more sessions on this topic!

William’s sharing on “Composition Vs Quality Vs Quantity” was a good reminder on the foundational elements. Definitely added to my understanding of these topics. I guess everybody is still amazed that he shoots his flashes in manual!!

Jenny Sun’s session was one of the highlights of the day for me. Really learned so much about branding and definitely made some things clearer for me. I can definitely identify with some of the limitations that she shared bout equipment, portfolio, etc. All in all, was definitely a great session.

Slideshow Karaoke!! “Think Youtside the box” and “Differ it”…hahahaha…Enough said…

Thanks everyone for making Shootfest 001 a great success. I personally was very blessed to be there; to have met so many amazing and talented people; and to have learned so much from their sharing and experience.

Looking forward to many more “Shootfes-es” to come!!

  10. Kaz Says:

  11. beyond aka Jasonboy Says:

Morning fellow Shoofestants! (Is there such a word ar).
I think I should intro myself again since I didnt really made a proper introduction. Hi! My name is Jason aka beyond aka Jasonboy (@missfionalim prefers this :P). I am a pharmacist by profession. I m a hobbyist when it comes to photography. I have not really done weddings before. So when I heard about #ShootFest (Hmm..Why am I typing in twitter mode), I jumped at the opportunity. We have good wedding photogs like Zach, Jon, Fiona, Grace, Eeyern, Mun Keat, Andy, Jenny, Willam and (the others, sorry, Long List but rest assured, you people are great photogs)giving pointers and insights of what it is really about as a wedding photog. I would conclude #Shootfest as a very good platform for wedding photogs and those intending to be one to come together and discuss/network/learn. And Not forgeting to have fun as well. Personally, I had a lot of fun at the photobooth :P I hope in near future, #Shootfest 2 would be held and rest assured, I ll be first in the line. Signing off. Jason.

  17. Louis Says:

I am bummed for missing out this one. Judging for the raves, it was a huge success. It confirms my belief that we have enormous talents in Asia…we just have to believe and affirm it. Hats off to the organizers who put this together.

Next shootfest should be organized and announced at least 6-9 months ahead so that out-of-town photographers can make travel arrangement. Also, I recommend that we run it during the week. A lot of photographers work during weekends.

  18. Benjamin Beck Says:

Shootfest was awesome. In these two days I get to meet great people and learned so much about the wedding photography industry. The sessions and presentations are hilarious yet inspiring. The sharing of experience really motivates me to be a better photographer and to push myself further.

  20. William G. Says:

You guys are simply amazing. Yeah!!!

  21. andychin Says:

    #ShootFest Rox! ’nuff said

  22. andychin Says:

I think I shld at least elaborate a lil’ ;p

#ShootFest is great, really. The spirit of sharing is what was lacking in the past in the industry. Gone are the day where everyone hides their secret in the secret chamber of no where in the middle of the dessert, or alike.

#ShootFest (I really have to address my twiddiction, using #hashtag) was a great success. @thebackpackr and @ShootDiva sponsoring the venue and those cushions and beanbags. Arrangement went smoothly and @munz ’s hospitality greatly appreciated. All speakers did very well, is really not about how well you speak, is You Did Come Up To Share! Thank you all.

Having #ShootFest not only let participants learn, we all met friends too, New and Old! Not to mention those twitizen living in the twitterverse of twitter timeline! ;p Great meeting you all pals.

  23. AdriAN YcL Says:

What else can say? Everything have been pointed out! haha This is really really good event.

I personally have learnt a lot not just in technical side of photography but many other things a photographer need to have.

I really enjoyed the fellowship there. Glad that I am able to know so many of you!

I am looking forward for more event like this!

  24. David Cheong Says:

    One word,

    Legendary!

I enjoyed every single session of it, with experienced speakers talking about their very own experiences, their thoughts, the industry, and just pretty much (yes according to Jenny) just being yourself makes it an enjoyment.

To be able to meet so many people with likewise interest as my own, to come together and share with each other on just about anything like a family with no other intentions, that’s what made it a big success.

And yeah I just can’t wait for the 2nd installment of Shootfest where I really wanna meet everyone again and yes new people yo!

And like Andy said, Shootfest rox nuff said!

  25. Aun Thiam Says:

This is a GREAT initiative by both Alex & Grace. The only snag is that it was not well publicized, as I only came to know about it AFTER some pics of the event were uploaded here.

  26. Mark Leo Says:

    Hi Aun Thiam,

Thanks for the comment. Would you have any suggestions on where you like to see Shootfest being publicized in the future?
    - Photography forums?
    - Print magazines?
    - Newspapers?
    - Word of mouth?

  27. Ian Says:

I had the privilege of attending my first ever unconferenc and it’s also the first time that I have been involved in the planning and execution of a photography event. Leading up to the event, I was given a very important task. One that can’t be ignored. Registration! I’m glad that I was picked, now I have everybody’s contact! Muahahaha…

Here are a few things that I’ve learnt over the past few weekend.

-Everybody is twittering! Yes, you can catch some gems from the many twitterers who twitted about #ShootFest at twittersphere. Phew…

-Fiona made me think about what is really in my bag. Probably a Snickers bar wrapper still left inside. Gotta start thinking about what I should be bringing for my next shoot.

-Realised that I didn’t get to introduce myself during the session that I lead about turning pro. After Edwin Tan introduced himself, people started asking questions. Next time, introduce yourself first!

-Dennis and Kris taught me about smart partnerships and there’s so much that we can do together!

-Kenneth’s topic on Photojournalistic Weddings was fantastic! Love his work and I really wished there was more time for him to finished what he wanted to share. There’s so much gem there!

-Pecha Kucha was fun. This should be part of ShootFest’s permanent programme from now on.

-Jon Low, what can I say. You da bomb, man! Now I gotta start pestering my wife about getting an iMac with a 30″ monitor! Ok, that’s not just what I learnt, I also learnt how to organise my work better. Still trying to find the best way for myself.

-Mun Keat, please teach me everything you know! Photoshop God! *bows down and worships*

-Cultural Weddings by Visithra, Johan, Jon and Kaz was amazing. I think I learnt the most during this session and probably I have to start looking for more weddings of other cultures in order to learn more. Anybody would like to hire me as an assistant?? I would love to get my hands on the slides to keep as reference.

-Danny, Danny, Danny… thanks for making me your model. You still owe me lunch ;)

-Asther, thanks for making time to share about contracts. I learnt a lot that day, gotta go back to my contract and make amendments now.

-Johan’s lessons on buying second hand equipment is invaluable. I’m gonna keep all these lessons close to heart…. so that I know when I sell stuff, what I need to hide from the eyes of the buyer. Bwahahaha….

-Zach’s work inspires me! I have been spending the whole week doing nothing but looking at fashion ads, music videos and just everything under the sky that can help me generate some nice concepts. Oh, that song from The Ting Tings is on my mind the whole week. Bought the song from iTunes. Thanks!

-Jenny’s voice is so soothing. I have a thing for Australian accents. Hehe. Well, there’s so much to process and there’s so much to think about in regards to my own branding. Thanks for sharing your insights.

-Lastly, I learnt a lot from all the new people that I’ve met. Thanks for adding me to Facebook and Twitter. You guys rock! Hope to meet you guys again soon!

I’ve decided that at the next ShootFest, I would want to present at least TWO sessions. Yes, TWO sessions! I think I am so fired up right now that I am already thinking about the topics. Hmm, how bout, “How to laugh your way to success”. Boy, I think I’m well known as the clown of ShootFest after the event, someone left a message saying that I brought a lot of fun to ShootFest. I hope I didn’t make you laugh til you peed in your pants! *wink*

  28. Asther Says:

Yeah… all I wana say have already been said by so many here!

Although I only managed to attend the final day session (due to shoot on Sat), I’ve also learnt so much from everyone who has shared their ever so valuable thoughts & knowledge.

    Johan:
You’re just sooo funny! TQ for being such a friendly & humble person. Your presentation on Malay wedding was an eye opener! Sorry I missed your 2nd presentation, tho! :(

    Zach:
What can I say but WOW! So glad to finally put a face to your amazing work on your blog! Hahaha… Your presentation has triggered my need to be more creative & daring now!

    Syahrin:
Altho you came in pretty much unprepared, still, your talk & work have been an inspiration nonetheless! TQ!

    Jenny:
TQ once again for sharing with us your experience & knowledge! Your true self is the only reason why everyone loves you & your work! ;) I love you too! :D

    Kee Sitt & Ian:
I laughed so much that day! :D Definitely made the whole event so lively & enjoyable. Sad that I’ve to miss the “karaoke” sessoin.

And last but not least, to everyone else that has contributed so so so much into this event. The name list is too long but YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!

Looking forward to the next ShootFest Unconference!

From the bottom of my heart,
    Asther

  29. Aun Thiam Says:

    Hello Mark,
Just my 2cents worth ya,.. dun egg me … if possible, is it possible for future shootfest to be publicized via:
    1. Facebook group/fan/page.
    2. Photography forums.
    3. DCM (Digital Camera Magazine)

    Thanks up front and cheers!
    :)

  30. Ian Says:

    Hi Aun Thiam

    1. It was on the facebook fan page http://www.shootfest.org/fb
    2. It was on some forums, at least the ones I know. (Photomalaysia, Clubsnap in Singapore)
    3. I believe there was a press release as well. Can’t remember which publication.

    Hope this helps.

  31. Woody Ang Says:

I had an excellent time at Shootfest. So much so, I’m looking forward to help organize the next one. It was just so much fun and well organized. Kudos to everyone involved in making this happen. It’s easily one of the best weekends I’ve had in a long, long time.

The following ‘concise reviews’ are only for the talks I was able to attend. I wish I could clone myself as there were times I wanted to be at both sides. Ah well.

    Fiona Lim
A very good introduction to the whole professional photographer’s work and gear. Personally felt it was very well done, and the gifts for those who asked questions (tho I didn’t get one )=) was a nice personal touch.

    Dennis Thean
Dennis showed to be an experienced presenter. He gave some very good business pointers as well. Think all that is due is compliments.

    Kris Wong
Kris gave an excellent presentation. Very clear, concise and got the message across. Can still remember the various different perspectives and possibilities he gave, not to mention an inside look into the editorial world. Well done.

    Alex Lam
Thoroughly enjoyed this presentation. I like how it said a lot about making it in this industry, without necessarily being photography-specific.

    Kenneth Hiew
I liked the way Kenneth showed enthusiasm for his own work. Think that’s a great trait to have.

    Jon Low
I’ve been personally using Lightroom for more than a year, and I still learnt something new. I think from a presentation point of view, it was important to note that there’s really no right or wrong in the way a person handles their catalog of images. Some of the audience might not have agreed, but I think that is an important point to put across. My 2 cents, I may suggest to explain why you prefer certain ways of handling the workflow the way you do. Otherwise, awesome stuff. Frankly, you made me miss Melbourne like hell.

    Mun Keat
Great insight into what’s possible in Photoshop. It’s just a shame about the slow laptop. Macbook time? :)

Johan Sopiee, Jon Low, Kaz Campbell, Visithra
I learnt soooo much from this presentation that I wish I had a recording of the entire thing. Makes me want to try photographing all kinds of weddings. Not only that, be a free understudy too ;)

    Danny Chew
I believe this is a topic that’s full of possibilities. Well done on giving a preview into what’s possible. I think it’s possible to even look into tethering the camera to show the immediate output.

I think this is such a difficult topic to really, really present well. People write books on this topic alone. Well done in trying to concisely explain this.

Seriously I kowtow to you. It was not just inspiring, it was awe-inspiring. The amount of creativity you have is astounding. Thanks for sharing your work, it’s truly an inspiration.

On a final note, the Pecha Kucha is an excellent idea. Really really enjoyed Grace, Jon, Kee Sit and Ian’s presentations. So much fun. I’m smiling just recalling them. I personally reckon Ian can probably make it big as a comedian as well.

Great job everyone. And thank you so much for making this Shootfest happen. I’m so glad to have been able to be part of it. When’s the next one? Count me in!

Oh and I forgot to add Jenny Sun’s talk into the mix as well. Excellent presentation that really drove the message across about being able to define yourself as a photographer.
